Gauteng - Midrand |
|
Gauteng Province, between Johannesburg and Pretoria This relatively new town, a prime growth point, started life as the attractive village of Halfway House, which remains a suburb and which, as its name implies, lies midway between the two great cities and benefits hugely from their proximity. Development has been large-scale and rapid; modern (largely high-tech) industries, commercial complexes, residential developments, prestige suburbs have rapidly and radically changed the character of the wider, once-pastoral area.
Snake Park Located at Halfway House, the park offers an intriguing variety of reptiles - the world's largest collection of African species - in an attractive setting. Snakes are 'milked' at regular times during the day. There's also a restaurant, curio shop and playground. Lippizaner Centre The South African National Equestrian Centre is based at nearby Kyalami (see below) and hosts a bevy of the famed Lippizaner horses. They perform (every Sunday) in as elegantly disciplined fashion as their colleagues at Vienna's famed Spanish Riding School. Kyalami Location of South Africa's premier motor racing circuit, which has hosted Grand Prix events in the past and may do so again; now devoted to major national motor-racing events.
Johannesburg lies just to the south; Pretoria just to the north. |
