Attractions
Architecture
There are many fine examples of Karoo architecture in the town. For example, the “old jail” is a small stone building in Church Street dating back to 1900. Probably the best example of a Victorian-styled house can be seen on Church Square.
Bird Watching
There are several dams on farms in the vicinity that may be visited for bird watching.
Corbelled Houses
These unique stone dwellings, shaped like old-fashioned beehives, can be found only in a small area of the Karoo, roughly between Loxton, Fraserburg, Williston, and Carnarvon. They were built from 1811 onwards by the early trekboers (migratory farmers) out of local stone, due to the lack of other building materials, and have no supporting roof beams.
Ixam Waterhole
Between Loxton and Fraserburg an /Xam-San waterhole can be seen alongside the road.
NG Church
Built in 1924 of local sandstone.
Replica Dutch Castle & Windmill
Set amongst dolerite koppies (hills) this three-storey castle, with its turrets capped with inverted cones and forty-four crenulated parapets, looks more like it belongs in a fairytale, than in the Karoo. A replica Dutch windmill was built not far from the castle.
San Sculptures (Voetspoor / Hiking Trail)
This 13km hiking trail crosses Karoo veld before winding through a small rocky ravine where Verreaux's Eagles (Black Eagles) nest, and up onto a plateau. It is here that the well-known sculptress, Marcella de Boom, built ‘The Dance’ - a circle of life-size bushmen sculptures - with the help of farm owner, the late John Sinclair.
