Location

West-central North West province, north of Potchefstroom.

Located in the dolomite-based grassland countryside to the west of the Pretoria-Johannesburg conurbation, Ventersdorp is a pleasant little town noted for the pines and willows that shade its streets, and for the unusual, castle-like architecture of its Dutch Reformed church. The surrounding area, drained by the waters of the Mooi River and the Skoonspruit, both of which flow into the Vaal, produce huge amounts of maize. It's also known for its perennial springs, most notable feature of which is the source, or 'eye, of the Skoonspruit, from which an impressive 65 million-plus litres of water wells up to the surface each day! (The more famous Eye of Kuruman , by contrast, produces less than a third of this amount). Of interest is the Rietspruit Dam to the south, a popular recreation area. Ventersdorp's visitor amenities include a hotel, guest-houses and self-catering accommodation.

Nearest towns

Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp are on the N12 national highway to the south; Lichtenburg lies to the north-west.
